Assessment

InTASC Standard #6: The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their
own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision
making.

Introduction

Assessment is one of the most important tools I use in my classroom. Assessment allows me to keep a constant pulse on the mastery of learning objectives and standards, and it allows me to plan for remediation and future lessons. It helps me understand in which areas of study and skills my students need the most practice, while allowing me to spend less time on skills my students have already mastered. Through assessment, we are able to maximize our time in the classroom.

While I conduct constant assessment through a wide variety of ways, there are three main areas where I utilize assessment to drive my students' growth. Through my use of benchmarks and diagnostic tools, my implementation of frequent summative checks, and my interpretation of the resulting data, I use assessment to inform nearly every aspect of my instructional practice. Using my focus on assessment and data, I model a growth mindset for my students and encourage them to embrace assessment as a tool for demonstrating mastery of our classroom goals.

Ass Conclusion

In conclusion, assessment is a critical tool in my classroom. Aligning each benchmark and summative to the state standardized test prepares my students to demonstrate all that they have learned at the end of the year, and ongoing data tracking, analysis, and interpretation by both teacher and students encourages us to constantly reflect on our progress towards big goals. Through my emphasis on assessment, I set my classroom - and my students - up for longterm success.
