Planning for Instruction

InTASC Standard #7: The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.

Introduction

When it comes to the tools in my teaching toolbox, planning for instruction is crucial. Effective planning sets the foundation of all that happens in my classroom, from positive learning outcomes for my students to behavioral norms. Planning instruction begins with a curriculum map for the year, which I write starting with which standards must be taught and when. Then I fill in the texts that I will use to teach these standards. As I write my curriculum map, I draw on knowledge from both my content area and across other disciplines. I also take into account my school's purchased curriculum and the resources that I know are already available to me. I select texts based on my knowledge of my students and the context of our community. Next, I plan my first sets of units for the year. My unit plans, which are most frequently based in inquiry, are where supported by my knowledge of teaching pedagogy and best classroom practices. After completing the unit plan, lesson planning begins. Within my lesson plans, I ensure that I am including activities which will support every learner. By taking this methodical approach to planning, I provide engaging learning opportunities for my students and meet or surpass ideal academic outcomes for every scholar.

Ass Conclusion

In conclusion, effective planning of instruction is a practice that propels my students towards significant growth and mastery of rigorous learning goals. By engaging in long-term planning on a school and classroom level, I envision all of the skills that my students must learn and practice during the course of the academic year. By drawing on my knowledge of my content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, I translate my year-long vision into unit plans that will appeal to my students and help them learn what they must know. By tapping into my knowledge of my learners and our community context, I break each unit down into effective daily lesson plans and remediation plans. Thanks to methodical planning that is aligned to curriculum and assessments, my students make significant gains towards their goals each year.
